letters from L.A.

JAN 15,

Dear Toma,

Thank you so much for reaching out and it is wonderful to hear from you.  I wanted to give you a bit of an idea from the ground here.  As you know, LA is a vast city and right now, the air quality is remarkably good, even in the areas close to where the fires burned.  Unless you are directly visiting those areas, the impact would not really be felt necessarily, but it would be probably a good idea to secure hotel rooms as soon as possible.

From our perspective, I can say that LA needs every bit of support right now, more than ever.  I moved to LA in the 90ties, when the art world was still so small here. Now that LA has such an absolutely crucial art scene that invigorates and inspires artists, galleries and museums across the US and the world, LA needs the support of the world.  This is also the first time that a climate disaster has affected one of the largest cities in the US, so the world is watching as to how we respond.  From what I see on the ground, the support and the love we are receiving is beyond inspiring and truly extraordinary.  It would be so wonderful if this spirit pf generosity and support can continue.

Please let us know if we can help in any way with your trip, we have many people on the ground who are excited for visitors to come in February, so we would love to be helpful.

All my best,

Susanne Veilmetter

The recent wildfires in Los Angeles have profoundly impacted our arts community, disrupting lives, livelihoods, and creative spaces. We want to express our support and solidarity with everyone affected during this incredibly challenging time. We also wish to recognize and commend the extraordinary efforts of first responders and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to address this crisis in our city.

As part of our commitment to supporting the recovery efforts, we are actively contributing to relief initiatives and collaborating with other arts organizations to maximize our collective resources and support those affected. Together, we aim to provide meaningful assistance and help our community rebuild stronger than ever.  - Roberts Projects (Gallery)

JAN 17,

Our team is in awe of how quickly LA restaurants have sprung into action to help their community — stepping up to offer free meals to displaced residents, evacuees and first responders, providing shelter, and creating a small amount of normalcy amid heartbreaking loss and disruption. Through various initiatives, OpenTable is pledging to commit over $1 million in support of the industry’s relief efforts and will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with restaurants in this community that make our business possible.

As a first step to support their efforts, OpenTable has donated $100,000 to help offset the costs for our LA-based restaurants that are offering relief. We’ve also launched a public GoFundMe so that others can join us in sustaining this vital work and help restaurants help even more people.*

This is just the beginning. - Open Table
